18K Repeater Chronograph

New postby Gawatch » Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:12 pm

I pulled this watch out to pop on Ebay to see if things have picked up. I have a question though what is that little gold colored arrow on the movement for. It is a first for me.

Does the arrow spin when the chimes work or does it stay still ?
TIA

I do not know the repeater mechanism is not working on the watch. The arrow does seem lke it would spin as it is attatched to the pinion which is connected to the gears below.

If it spins then I would guess it is some kind of simple speed control.
On the quality repeaters you often see a sort of governor assy with weights.
This may be the budget version.

I am not sure if I would call this a budget version as it is also a chronograph and is in a large 18k gold hunting case.

My understanging is that the better repeaters had jewels in the repeater train.
I am not saying this is a cheap watch (no repeaters were) but in the repeater line it is not one of the top ones.
This MAY explain the simplified speed control system.
Twas just an observation. :D :D :D

Attached is a high end repeater for comparison.

Yes a lot of the newer ones that were slide repeaters had a lot more jewels even the hammers were jeweled on many high end ones. The pump repeater I have listed on Ebay right now http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3940&item=260489305087 doesnt show many jewels either but I believe it will fetch close to 2k ( I hope ;) ) even though it is not running.

I will be watching yours. I still have one on my wish list and the good ones are way outside my budget.
I suspect the gold case on this will put it beyong my reach as well.
But I don't mind the silver cases.

Ya you need one I have a few in the safe even a waltham 5 minute. Best to get one not working since you can repair it yourself. I personally wouldnt attempt it.

Rob, I think it is the speed clutch for the repeater as I can`t see any other thing that would do it, but it would be hard to adjust the speed of the chimes if it is. John

It's the governor for the repeater speed. They just used an arrow shape for something with the weight and length they wanted. Run the repeater and you'll see it spins.
