Waltham Vanguard Hunter with Provenance

New postby rrpktwtchr » Wed Jan 28, 2009 5:55 pm

Waltham, Vanguard, 19j, 14k Hunter, adj, sn-12087034, ca- 1902/03

Research indicates that this watch belonged to Harry A. Blasdell (1882-1941), son of Heman M. Blasdell (1840-1905).

The name Blasdell was traced back to the village of Blasdell, NY. Herman Blasdell was the first station master for the depot built at the crossover of the Erie and Pennsylvania Railroads in the 1870's. He received permission to establish a Post Office within the depot. At that time, since no name existed for this area with very few residents, he proceeded to place his own name on the depot - hence, Blasdell, NY - which still exists to this day as a suburb located five miles South of Buffalo on the shores of Lake Erie.

Ironically, Herman and his wife perished in a home fire in 1905, the same year as on the watch.

Jim,
Thanks for posting this watch. I am amazed that the case is so crisp. Gold cases don't usually hold up this well. It is oblivious that it was not carried.
The history really adds to the total package.

:) Thanks, everyone, for the nice comments . . . all things considered, it's probably the jewel of my small meager collection.

To color the story of this beautiful watch just a bit more and hopefully without taking anything away from it, Harry Arthur Blasdell was the adopted son of Henry M and Lucinda Sherman Blasdell. Harry was born 26 April 1882. It appears that he made a success of the florist business throughout his working years.

Thanks for your input, Patrick - every little bit helps! . . . btw, I did not come across that additional personal data during my initial research.

Great true story and great watch and pictures.
I am glad the watch was not lost in the fire that took these people,s lives.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
