Heyworth wrist watch

New postby Radar » Wed Nov 30, 2011 8:29 pm

Has anyone run across any information about Heyworth wrist watches? I don't believe they are valuable or collectable but I'd like some background on the watch. It was my grandfather's watch after his pocket watch became too expensive to repair. Looks kind of like a Timex, very plain. It is a 17 jewel, Swiss, incabloc. As a side note, my grandfather carried his pocket watch for around 50+ years and when he got the Heyworth wrist watch, he loved it.

Can you post some photos, Dennis? I've seen one or two pockets but no wrists.

Glyn
I just recently shipped the watch to Derek for cleaning. The watch is running but has never, ever been cleaned. My grandfather obtained the watch sometime around 1965 when he swapped his pocket watch as a trade in. When I found out that the pocket watch was gone I was really bummed out and asked him to try and retrieve the pocket watch and thankfully he got the pocket watch back.

I've got the Heyworth watch done, but am waiting for a new crystal to arrive as the original was cracked. With Dennis' (Radar's) permission, I'll post some pictures.

Go ahead and post any pictures your want. I've got nothing to hide from the folks. What is your opinion (honest opinion) of the Hayworth?

It's a good runner and should keep time to 30 seconds a day or better. The movement is a 17 jewel Standard Time 1686, which is basically an A. Schild 1686. I think it would be described as medium quality and should hold up to many years of service.
Here is the page from Dr. Ranfft's site... http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db. ... ndard_1686

If you're interested, I can give you a quote on refinishing the dial and hands, but wait until you see the pictures to decide. I'm away from home today, I should have the pictures up tomorrow. The case and movement are in very good shape, with nary a fault. You also have a very nice vintage Kreisler stainless steel band in very good condition.

Derek

Excuse the ignorance but why does it have all the holes drilled into the face side?

I've never even really thought of that before. Perhaps the other holes are for other dial feet layout.
