Ladies silver cased Elgin

New postby dweiss17 » Mon Oct 05, 2009 4:51 pm

The other day I was downstairs looking for something and noticed this little 6-O size lying forlorn among the other material in
that box. Winding it a few turns, it came to life immediately. Opening the hinged back, I was surprised to see the tarnished
case was 925/1000 fine silver. It looks like the Star Watch Case Co. stamped into the inside back. Looking up the serial #
denoted it as being 1915 manufactured. I was surprised to see the solid hands on that dial. Looking further into the Price Guide,
I saw another larger version with the same sort of hands; so I must assume the hands are original to the watch. Surely it may
have been made for a lady to wear. The dial is fine, what shows is a red piece of clay putty.

Hi Dan, That is known as a nun's watch. When the good sisters were wearing habits for daily dress, they would carry a small silver watch attached to the habit with a cord or chain. Most all of the watches that I have seen were the same style as yours.
