Model 57 Balance "Material"

What "material" are they talking about on pocket watch data bases when "gold balance material" is mentioned? It implies a gold balance wheel-?-which I have never seen. Yet. :)

The abbreviated content of this database leaves a lot to the imagination in my opinion.
I would think the "solid" balance would refer to a one piece balance wheel. I see there are other examples shown that have 2 piece wheels but the first one pictured shows a solid balance wheel.
I don't think there would be a reason for a manufacturer to offer a "solid gold" balance wheel. That type of thing would be offered with a highly jeweled and high priced watch. Now, I have seen watches with solid gold jewel settings, then other parts would be "gold flashed".
Just offering my $.02 without doing further research..... But, I would think the balance wheel would be gold flashed if listed as "gold".
Maybe others here will know more on this subject.

P.S. I see most of the google references to a "solid gold" balance wheel on a P S Bartlett watch are listed on ebay where someone is trying to sell something. I don't see any forum threads where "people in the know" are giving info regarding a solid gold balance wheel. They do however mention a balance having solid gold balance wheel weights.
($.02 more...)

That makes $.04 from me.

I could be wrong " and likely am", but I was once told b a reasonably intelligent man that some of the very early 992's had a gold balance wheel ?
Don't know for sure, but I had an early one once and the wheel was a slightly different color than than the newer ones.

I think they are probably talking about early, uncompensated balance wheels in this instance. Common grade watches often had solid steel balance wheels and better grades had gold balance wheels.

This one has a gold balance wheel -

Jerry! Thank you-I don't know how I missed this. I have an early M.59 coming home soon and I believe-I hope-it has one also.
