Hello, And Happy Friday. 2 Months Ago, I became the owner of a Hampden 1894, grade 109D (in split flag). The movement is 8mm thick with the dial. After a huge amount of searching, with lots of questions. I found a beautiful Bristol open face case to house her in. With a small amount of "nibling" , the movement fits very well. The Watch itself Keeps great time. It Has Been a new and satisfying experience. I have not seen others like her. I am curious what the value might be, and any thoughts. Here Are Photos. Thanks Enjoy MT

I had one of these very similar to yours. I cased mine in a silveroid OF case. I sold mine at my chapter mart for $50.

That will give you a starting point.

In an older price guide, they went for $75-150 but as you know some prices have dropped dramatically recently.

I'm sorry, Mike but the case is worth more than the movement!

Am getting the feedback I was looking for. How come I have never seen one when looking on Ebay or anywhere else? I myself am very new to the watch world so that being said, I still like the way it keeps time. It has interesting hands, and with the case it's a very nice looking pocket watch. My question is, do watches sometimes have a "cool" factor? MT

If they do,I'd say the dial has it. The mixed hands do not-you have a Moon minute and Crescent hour,Mike!

Mike -

You will find as you get more experience collecting that Hampden was a smaller company and not as popular as say Illinois or Hamilton. They also used odd cases. So you will not see as many or with correct cases.

Marty B is one of the biggest Hampden collectors I know!

Absolutely, but this does not always equate to much in value. In this hobby you'll find a lot of cool watches that have pretty modest values, and I don't consider this a negative since what it really means is that some interesting watches can still be collected on a very reasonable budget.

The early 16 size Hampdens are in my opinion attractive and interesting watches. For perspective on where your Grade 109 fits into Hampden's early 16 size line ... an early 1890's ad in the Hernick/Arnold Hampden book lists the original sale price of your Grade 109 movement as $16, lists the price of the five different 17 jewel 16 size grades as ranging from $70 to $20, lists the 11 jewel Grade 110 which was the lowest grade early 16 size at $11.50, and lists the 23 jewel freesprung Grade 103 which was the top grade at $200.
