Question About an Odd Watch Case

New postby MartyW » Mon Dec 15, 2014 3:52 am

I recently won this 12 size Elgin on eBay. It's a Model 4, Grade 491, 19 jewel & adjusted to 3 positions.

I haven't been able to get much information about it but am more curious as to what that style of case would be called, as I have never seen anything similar.

Any help at all would be most appreciated.

Thanks, and y'all have a Merry Christmas.

Now that is an interesting piece. I don't think I've ever seen one! Can you say who made this case-?-can I see her back,Marty the E?
What's she hiding from me? ;)

MTY:

Should have that in hand by week's end as it was bought Sunday afternoon, and I cannot see the maker on the seller's scans.

Will get back to you as soon as I can,

The term I've heard used is a "pyramid bow case". I suspect that the crown may be a replacement.
The case looks very similar to the 16 size case used for the post war Elgin Grade 571 RR grade watches.

Never saw a 12s case like this, but I own a couple of these cases in 16s. Nice find!!

The crown may be a replacement, but hard to tell. Here's one that sold awhile back. Serial numbers are fairly close, both made in '33.

Gents:

Watch arrived this morning and took right off running. I do believe the bow is original as it is the only place on the case showing any wear/brassing.

Here's a scan of the case maker's marking which is clear enough to read.
