I have a lot of documentation for one of these devices.
Thought I might share it and this looks like a reasonable place to do it.

Here is that little card they mention.
The trace goes through the upper and lower slot and between the two parts.
The trace lines are viewed through the grid on the smaller card.
Using the handle rotate the grid till it matches the lines and you get a reading of how good the watch is.
Doubt these are still available but this is what they look like.
