I always wondered why the slide attachment for my WW lathe had an extension to the lead screw opposite the hand wheel.

Answer - screw cutting.

Obvious now that I think about it but for those who didn't know ( like me ) here is a picture that tells it all.

For the record this lathe attachment ( just the bit with the gears on it and the drive shaft) went for $1677 :o
