Help for a Friend?

New postby watchguy » Tue Oct 30, 2012 1:50 pm

I'm not sure where to post this, hopefully it will be okay here. [Ed:Topic moved]

A new-collector friend of mine recently sent me this email message
Derek - Are you a member of ihc185? I just joined that group.

This was my response.
HMMM. I'd seriously reconsider being a part of that group! I belong to a lot of online groups, and that one is the only one I would never join. Call me if you'd like to talk. Or if you'd like more information. I know several former members.

Please consider these instead of chapter 185.

I'm a member of all of the above.

I didn't even join the NAWCC until November of 2007, so I've never really heard the whole story. In a nutshell, what should I tell my friend?

Is the history of this group still in the postings on the other board.
If it is still there he should get a good understanding of the leader and the happenings.

Derek . . . just a suggestion; however, if you were to just inform your friend that they were expelled by the NAWCC, then, imho, that, in & of itself, should tell him all he needs to know in a nutshell in order "to read between the lines" & reach a decision as to whether or not he really wants to be associated with them . . . rather than trying to struggle through all the gory histrionic details with him . . . at least, that's all I'd need to know ;)

Thanks Jim.
I'll be sure to mention the fact that they were expelled from the NAWCC, but this friend is a new collector, and has no concept of what the NAWCC is. I think he just stumbled across the other group when doing an internet search.

Been there; done that; got the logo mug and the life-membership plaque. It was learning the hard way. ;)

My advice for newbie collectors is to start here, at GH. If the hobby then gets a hold of you, consider joining the NAWCC or another horological society.

BUT ...

Avoid any group where the leaders have been expelled from the NAWCC ... IHC 185 being the most obvious.

Hi Jim,
I'd like to see those links. I looked at some other links that were posted previously and see where he was involved with some court cases, but found nothing after that seemed to be related to his dealings with IHC or even during the same time period.
