Tissot PRC T461

New postby Irwin » Wed Jul 06, 2016 6:36 am

My cheap well used Timex, worn daily for 10 years, finally gave up the ghost and I sent it to the Timex place. The repair estimate was almost the price of a new replacement.
After months of hesitation I finally decided on a Tissot chronograph and yesterday bought a second hand Tissot PRC T461 on eBay.
The pics on the sale site look good, but now I am concerned I might have bought a good fake. There's a lot online about how to identify a fake, but until I get it into my hands it's a question mark.
Anybody have experience with the Tissot?

Irwin,
When you get it, open the back and see if it has the Swiss movement in it. Also, a fake will say where its made on the inside of the case back. You can also tell by the weight of the watch (in most cases) and if you know the actual weight for this model from Tissot, then this watch should match it...

Irwin -

We carry these in the store I do repairs for.

The watch is real. The issue you may have is the movement is not serviceable, and the company has stopped selling them. If the watch requires more than a battery. The service can only be done in an authorized service center and it may cost you what you paid for the watch. They last 5-10 years depending how you wear them.

Thanks. That is encouraging.
When I receive it I'll post a few pics here and ask if you could confirm.
The truth is that I didn't think about a possible fake until after I had paid and then I had the thought, What if?
I can't find the identical model on the Tissot website and that got me thinking. There seems to be a number of variants but I haven't found this precise model. From what you say I understand it could be an older model and no longer in production.

My understanding is that if I were to open the back to check the movement, as it is water resistant, then there could be an issue with the gasket (maybe calling for a replacement?) when closing it up. Is this correct?

Usually when you open the back it is a good practice to replace the gasket. This is not always done which could contribute to early failure of the movement when replacing a battery. I've noticed watches slowly lose battery longevity and had not considered the case gasket going bad and it causing moisture to get inside. For that matter, there is a gasket for the stem and crown that also needs attention from time to time. Neil can do that stuff for you.

Irwin,
that is why I mentioned the weight aspect of the watch since you would not have to open it up to do that...

Irwin -

Normally what Ray suggested is best, but I suspect you don't have access to those parts. So I would say to you, IF you are careful enough to reinstall the back without kinking or damaging the gasket, you should be OK. I do not consider this watch to be very water resistant since the pushers do not lock in place. IF they are pushed while the watch is immersed, you can run the risk of water getting in.

let's not worry about all this until you get the watch in.

And yes to the last part of your question - this model is discontinued.

Arrived, and these are the pics.
I brought up the online user's manual and have checked the functions - everything is apparently working.
It came with a ticket and both leather and ss bands.
Having looked at lots of online pics and compared, I think it's real.
Neil and Ray - What do you guys think?
