S/N 13,581,xxx is a grade 335, class 105, 4th model and one of 86,000 made. It should be 17 jewel, open face, and lever set. Circa 1908.

Thanks Derek! Remind me again if you have already, what book would one have to purchase to get the Elgin info?

Most of the info is in Roy Ehrhardt's book, Elgin Watch Company Grade and Serial Numbers, the other information (class and date of manuf.) is in Shugart's Complete Guide to Watches. You can find copies for sale here: http://watchrepairinfo.com/suggread.htm They do come up for sale on eBay from time to time.

I see I misspoke, the information about the class is also on Ehrhardt's book.

Does it tell you in Ehrhardt's book what the first year of production and last year of production was for a particular grade?

One of the most useful books I have is "American Pocket Watches - Serial Number and Grade Book - 1993 Prices". This single volume by Ehrhardt & Meggers has serial numbers for Elgin, Illinois, Rockford, Hamilton and several other companies, and the Illinois data is more up-to-date that the printed Encyclopedia, but not as complete as the digital database by Russ Snyder. This book tells me that the Elgin in question is a grade 335; that there were 86,000 of this grade in 64 runs; first number - 11873001; last number 16582000; 18 size, hunting, nickel, 4th model, lever set, 17 jewels. What more could one ask?

Jerry,

Thanks for the info. Starting serial and ending serial is useful to me. It is always intresting knowing the span of time they made a particular grade.

Erhardt's Elgin Watch Company Grade and Serial Numbers book does list the 1st and last serial number of every grade.
I would love to have a copy of "American Pocket Watches - Serial Number and Grade Book - 1993 Prices" !! Santa are you listening?

Here is a very interesting "H Bode" Elgin cleaning project for a friend. Suppose someone could have a look in the book for this one? A couple striking features of this watch is the pierced Balance cock which appears to be a factory job. The inside edge of the cut-out is gilded. I don't believe I personally have worked on an Elgin keywinder with this style pillar plate either? Is this a common grade? Also the "Chicago" and "Manf" and "ills" is somewhat interesting. I was thinking a Private Label but the dial does not reflect a PL? It is 11J and has an uncompensated balance.

I suppose this watch may deserve a thread of it's own but suppose we could start with some book info? Thanks in advance!

#303293 is shown in more recent lists as a grade 12, first model KW 18-size, supposedly 7 jewels. In my hardbound Elgin material catalog from 1904 the grade is given as "Ogden", class 5 material and the Ogden is listed with 11 jewels. This one was evidently custom modified for the retailer (Bode). The marking on the barrel bridge tells the purchaser that it was made in Elgin, Illinois. I have seen a few others with the cut-out balance cock and marked for retailers.

Jerry,

Thanks for the info. I happened across the NAWCC Elgin PL list with more than a few examples with the heart-shape cut-out. No PL's for "H Bode" however. I would like to submit this PL and have it added to the list. Wonder if anyone is maintaining the Elgin PL list these days..?

I see Elgin Watch Company Grade and Serial Numbers by Ehrhardt lists it as a grade 12, class 5, 18s, full plate, hunting case, w/ gilded plates, 1st model, key wind, slow train with 7 jewels. There were 70,255 of this grade produced in 48 runs. The 1st serial number was 30296 and the last was 559500.

It is sad that the site is down, but in the meantime, this site is a good alternative. Just post your serial number here, and I'm sure someone will give you the info you need! :D
