The Tiangong Cifu Clock - Macau

New postby Wazza » Sat Nov 06, 2010 5:19 am

It has taken me sometime to post the pictures of this clock that resides in the bottom plaza of a casino in Macau. A friend of mine is the Security head honcho for Crown Casino, Macau and he took Debbie and I on a guided tour of Old and New Macau in January this year. The little island is worth a visit and I suggest 2 days and a bloody good set of walking shoes.

It is the Tiangong Cifu, an Imperial Clock made in the Quing Dynasty also known as the Manchu Dynasty, was the last ruling dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912 (with a brief, abortive restoration in 1917). It was preceded by the Ming Dynasty and followed by the Republic of China.

The clock was made in 19th Century and is Paste Set. It is a musical Automaton Clock. It is constructed of Gilt Metal.

It looks in pretty shabby state and I doubt the movement actually functions. Maybe someone could offer to do a restoration for a couple of Million USD, roughly 37 minutes takings on a weekend day in this one casino alone.

Excuse the quality, everything was behind armoured glass.

Reading this reminded me of the fabulous clock collection housed in the Forbidden City Palace, Beijing.
If I remember correctly it includes a huge water powered clock.
