Shatz 1000 day clock

New postby brownsrplm » Mon Jan 06, 2014 11:59 pm

I just picked up this intact Shatz 1000 day clock for a song on eBay no less! $60 for one that just needs servicing is unheard of around here. I couldn't let this one pass me since I didn't own a 1000 day and it was a buy-it-now that had just been listed. Here are a few shots of it.

Not bad at all ray, 60 is a bargain, usually they go so much higher. I dont have one like this, one day perhaps.

Kevin,
It truly shocked me as well. I think it's because the lady I bought it from had just started selling. In fact I was her first sale. People don't want to take chances like that much, but I saw that she was selling a bunch of other stuff and decided to give her a try. We all start out at 0 don't we? You are right about the price too, I was literally shocked to get it under $200.00 let alone $60. But, that's the name of the game isn't it. I just love a great deal!!

Clock arrived today and is as presented. The usual missing key was the only drawback. Clock was well packed and came in a timely manner, so no gripes here! Since I was the first to purchase from the seller I'd say it was a risk well worth taking. Seller stated that the clock was her grandparents clock and she had no use for it, what a shame :(

Too bad Ray that people dont treasure family heirlooms like this clock. Good thing it came well packed.

Ray - What identifies it as a 1000 day clock? How did you recognize it?
Did you identify it by knowing the specific model, or did it say so in the seller's description?

Irwin,
Shatz made two specific designs that were 1000 day clocks. Most of them, if you are lucky say so on the face. Terwilliger's book shows the design of the plates for those clocks and if you look close at the one I posted, the legs are part of the plates. That's the best I can tell you, other than viewing enough of them to know when you see one. They did make variants that were like a standard dome type, which I am still looking for, but most were the carriage style.

Decided to play with this one a bit this morning. I let up the guard for the suspension, moved the lever that holds the weights in place and started the pendulum. After a bit I noticed it was hitting more to one side than the other and would eventually quit running so I adjusted the saddle. She is still running now after 7 hours and on time. I believe that the woman who sold this to me did not know how to take it out of storage mode and thought it was broke. If she had, it may have ruined the suspension spring and I would have had a lot more work to do.

Ray you were lucky on this one as the pendulum was locked, less chance the susp spring to get damaged, a nice buy and find.

If it's intact it is definitely worth it!
