Butterfield Sector

Michael Butterfield, b. 1635, d. 1724. Well known maker of mathematical instruments and portable sundials. He was British born and worked in Paris 1677-1724. He became so famous at the beginning of the 18th century that even Peter The Great visited his workshop while he stayed in the French Capitol in 1717. The Sector shown here is an instrument that is used to solve computations which use the rule of proportion. This valuable instrument is on display at The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation, Waltham, Mass. The British Museum & Guildhall Museum, London have Butterfield instruments and sundials on display.
