Balance spring (In French: spiral)

A very fine spring which could be considered the heart of a mechanical watch. Its ends are affixed to the balance and the balance-cock and its elasticity allows the balance to make regular oscillations. The duration of each oscillation is determined by its length and the moment of inertia of the balance. The effective length of the balance spring can be altered to regulate the watch.
